Breast Augmentation in Indianapolis: Placement, Sizing & What to Consider

With breast augmentation consistently ranking among the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the U.S., it’s no surprise the conversation around it continues to evolve—especially when celebrities speak openly about their own experiences. Kylie Jenner recently revealed details about her breast augmentation, which sparked renewed curiosity about implant size, placement, and expectations.

At Turkle & Associates Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics in Indianapolis, we welcome these discussions as an opportunity to educate patients on the realities of breast augmentation—from surgical technique to implant choice. Led by Dr. Janet Turkle and Dr. Brandon Specht, our practice combines surgical expertise with advanced technology like Vectra® 3D Imaging, helping patients make informed, confident decisions about their bodies.

Implant Placement: Over, Under, or Dual Plane?

One of the first decisions in your breast augmentation journey is where to place the implant: over the muscle (subglandular), under the muscle (submuscular), or partially under the muscle (dual plane). Each approach has unique advantages depending on your anatomy, lifestyle, and aesthetic goals.

Subglandular (Over the Muscle)

In this technique, implants are placed above the pectoral muscle but beneath the breast tissue. Best for: Patients with adequate natural breast tissue for coverage.

Pros:

  • Faster recovery
  • Less animation (movement of the implant during muscle contraction)

Considerations:

  • May result in more visible implant edges or rippling, especially in thinner patients
  • Slightly higher risk of capsular contracture

Submuscular (Under the Muscle)

Here, the implant is placed beneath the pectoral muscle. Best for: Patients with minimal natural tissue who want a more natural slope.

Pros:

  • More tissue coverage = more natural appearance
  • Lower risk of visible rippling
  • Reduced risk of capsular contracture

Considerations:

  • Slightly longer recovery
  • Possibility of implant distortion during intense chest muscle use (e.g., bodybuilders)

Dual Plane (Partially Under the Muscle)

A hybrid approach, the upper portion of the implant is placed beneath the muscle while the lower part sits behind breast tissue. Best for: Patients who want natural upper fullness and lift.

Pros:

  • Balanced look and feel

Considerations:

  • More complex surgery, requiring expert precision

At Turkle & Associates, Drs. Turkle and Specht will assess your anatomy, goals, and lifestyle to determine the most appropriate placement technique for you.

Sizing: What Does 300cc Actually Mean?

One of the most common questions we hear is: “How big is ___cc?” The truth is, implant volume is measured in cubic centimeters (ccs), not cup sizes—because cup size varies between bra brands, body shapes, and even countries.

While it’s tempting to compare your goals to a friend or celebrity like Kylie Jenner, the same implant size can look drastically different on two different bodies.

Factors That Influence How Size Appears:

  • Height and torso length
  • Base diameter of breast
  • Current breast tissue
  • Skin elasticity and breast shape

For example, a 300cc implant may appear as a small C cup on a tall, broad-framed woman, and a full D cup on someone petite. That’s why we use Vectra® 3D Imaging—an advanced tool that allows you to “try on” different implant sizes and profiles virtually. It gives patients a realistic preview of how various options may look on their own body, taking out much of the guesswork.

Choosing the Right Implant Type

At Turkle & Associates, we offer several types of implants to help you find the right combination of feel, projection, and longevity:

1. Saline Implants: Filled with sterile saltwater, these implants are placed empty and then filled during surgery. Pros:

  • Smaller incision
  • Adjustable volume
  • Immediate detection of rupture
  • Feel: Firmer and slightly less natural than silicone.

2. Silicone Gel Implants: Pre-filled with a cohesive silicone gel, these implants are the most popular choice today. Pros:

  • Soft, natural feel
  • Less rippling than saline
  • Feel: Closest to natural breast tissue.

3. Cohesive Silicone Gel “Gummy Bear” Implants: A version of silicone gel with a slightly firmer consistency for more shape retention. Pros:

  • Balance of softness and structure
  • Great for patients who want a fuller upper pole of the breast
  • Lower risk of rippling
  • Soft, natural feel

During your consultation, your surgeon will help guide you toward the best implant based on your desired look, lifestyle, and anatomy. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution—and we’ll walk with you through every step.
