Breast implants alone may improve the appearance of tuberous breasts, but in some cases reconstructive surgery may be required. After an examination, your surgeon will be able to make recommendations.
Breast asymmetry can be improved by performing surgery on one of your breasts or both breasts. After an examination and determining your goals from surgery, your surgeon will discuss your options.
Generally, if you want to match the smaller breast to the larger breast, you may decide to place a breast implant in the smaller breast. If you want to match the larger breast to the smaller breast, we will do a reduction on the larger breast. If you want to enlarge and change the appearance of both breasts, we will use different size breast implants in each breast. The surgical plan is solely based on your goals!
Smoking before or after surgery increases the visibility of scarring and causes problems with healing. Therefore, we require that all patients cease the use of nicotine products (including cigarettes, e-cigarettes, chewing tobacco and all other products containing nicotine) at least 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after surgery.
The ability to breastfeed after nipple surgery will depend upon the extent of the surgery needed. After an examination and recommendation for surgery, your surgeon will provide an opinion on your potential ability to breastfeed.
Inverted nipples are usually caused by a shortened milk duct connecting the nipple to the chest wall, which adds tension and pulls the nipple inward. After surgery, women with inverted nipples can expect nipples that will project from the breast.
Many patients ask us about post surgical activity restrictions to help them decide the time of year that is best for their breast revision surgery. In general, you can expect to be able to submerge in water 6 weeks after your surgery, or after your wounds are totally healed. Regarding exercise, you will be able to walk immediately after your release, but you should wait about 2 weeks before restarting any cardio or lower-body exercises. Restrictions will include no lifting, pushing, or pulling anything greater than 10 pounds for 6 weeks after surgery.
We will review your full instructions for postoperative care during your initial consultation. Our number one goal is to help you heal quickly and minimize your downtime. We will discuss your specific restrictions and help you determine how long to take off work and other duties at your consultation.
Depending on your pain tolerance and the type of work you do, you may be back at work anywhere between 5 and 7 days after your breast revision. However, some patients are able to return to work sooner! It simply depends on your individual healing process and the extent of the breast revision.
Incision patterns for breast revisions can vary depending on the type of revision needed to achieve your goals. Your surgeon will explain the recommended incisions during your initial consultation.
