Rhinoplasty

Refine Your Profile

Breathe easy. Feel free.

The shape, size, and profile of the nose can have a profound effect on a person’s appearance and self-confidence.

Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, is a common cosmetic procedure that can achieve striking results by enhancing the appearance of the nose. Rhinoplasty surgery can change the size of the nose, balance the facial profile, improve symmetry, narrow the nostrils, reshape the tip of the nose, or change the angle between the nose and upper lip.

We find many patients have trouble visualizing how their surgical result will look and some patients find it difficult to pinpoint their goals. To assist in communication and planning, we use VECTRA 3D imaging which provides a general simulation of what you might expect from your surgery. VECTRA 3D is a wonderful tool that creates an image of the projected cosmetic changes to be made, which facilitates better communication and understanding between you and your surgeon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the incision made for nose surgery or rhinoplasty?

The majority of the incisions are placed inside the nose. An incision is also made across the columella (the narrow strip of tissue that divides the nostrils at the nasal base), which is hidden and becomes inconspicuous after a few short weeks.

The final result of any surgery takes 6 to 12 months to see. This is particularly true for a rhinoplasty patient. Your results may continue to change until all of the swelling has resolved, the deeper tissues have healed, and the incisions heal completely. Typically within 3-4 weeks, results are excellent. Changes that take place after that time are usually minor and can only be seen when looking closely at photographs.

No, there isn’t a clear-cut age limit, but a rhinoplasty is best performed once facial development is complete, which occurs in the later teenage years. There are certainly exceptions and your doctor will make this determination after a thorough discussion and evaluation.

Sometimes grafts are needed in order to achieve the cosmetic or functional results that are desired. Fortunately, these can generally be taken from the septal cartilage inside the nose. In certain cases, cartilage from the ear or rib may be needed. Rarely, other materials will be used and this will all be discussed, if appropriate, at the time of your consultation

No. When a septoplasty is performed in conjunction with rhinoplasty, splints (clear plastic tubes) may be placed to optimize healing inside of the nose, but no packing will be placed. You will use nasal sprays frequently during your recovery to keep the splints clear, so you can breathe well through your nose.

Most bruises resolve within 10 to 14 days or can at least be easily covered with make-up. Throughout your recovery, you will use nasal spray multiple times per day to aid in healing and allow you to breathe through your nose. Applying ice and keeping your head elevated also dramatically accelerate your healing.

  • You can swim in 3 weeks or when your wounds are completely healed.
  • You can start walking immediately.
  • You can begin to exercise and/or lifting in 2 weeks.
  • Contact sports should be avoided for several weeks to avoid nasal injury during healing.

Most patients are back at work in 1 week, sometimes sooner. “Social” recovery will take longer, as bruising and swelling resolve.

Yes, but this is done on a case-by-case basis depending on the patient’s goals and the safety of the procedure. Non-surgical rhinoplasty, or liquid rhinoplasty, is performed using dermal fillers to provide subtle changes in the shape of the nose.
